긴 일과가 끝나고 집에 오면 아마 피곤할 것이다. 그렇다고 또 잠을 너무 많이 자면 아침에 피로감이 가득한 상태로 일어날 것이다. 따라서 걱정을 떨쳐내고 긴장을 푼 다음, 편안하고 깊게 잠들어 아침에 기분 좋게 일어나는 법을 아는 것은 어찌 보면 사회에서 필수적으로 익혀야 할 기술이라 볼 수 있을 것이다.

- 편안한 상태 만들기. 너무 몸의 움직임을 제한하거나 꽉 끼는 옷은 입지 않도록 한다. 또한 당신의 체온을 너무 높이지 않는 옷이 적당하다. 이런 옷들은 당신의 몸을 불편하게 만들어 수면을 방해할 여지가 있다. 당연히 수면이 방해받으면 아침에 피곤하게 된다.[1]
- 전자기기 끄기. 적어도 자기 한 시간 전에는 컴퓨터, 핸드폰, 티비를 다 끄도록 한다. 전자기기의 밝은 화면은 뇌를 자극해 수면을 방해하기 때문에 최대한 자기 전에 해당 제품을 이용하지 않는 것이 좋다.[5]
- 마음 진정시키기. 만약 뇌가 계속 활동해서 잠에 드는 것이 힘들다면 잠깐 생각을 멈춰보라. 책을 읽는 것처럼 다른 행동에 집중하다가 다시 침대에 누워보라. 그러면 자는 것에만 집중할 수 있게 되어 취침이 더 편해질 것이다.[6]
- 마음을 가라앉히는 또 다른 방법으로는 명상이 있다. 명상은 잡념을 제거할 수 있기 때문에 제대로만 하면 정신과 육체를 쉽게 진정시킬 수 있다.[7] 잘 알려지고 쉬운 명상법의 하나로 자신의 호흡에 집중하는 것이 있다. 심호흡을 천천히 해보도록 한다. 그리고 오직 호흡에만 집중하도록 한다.[8] 숨을 들이쉴 때는 4까지 센다. 마찬가지로 숨을 내쉴 때 4까지 센다. 호흡을 천천히 하면서 세는 것이 중요하다.
- 그리고 손이 닿는 곳에 펜/연필을 놓는 것 역시 좋다. 내일 해야 할 일이 계속해서 생각난다면 걱정하는 대신 해야 할 일을 종이에 적도록 한다.[9]
- 규칙적으로 자기. 매일 같은 시간에 자고 같은 시간에 일어나도록 한다. 이를 통해 몸이 언제 자고 언제 일어나야 할지 기억하게 되어 익숙해지면 저절로 잠들 수 있게 된다.[13]
- 멜라토닌 복용하기. 멜라토닌은 잠을 유도하는 호르몬이다. 이미 잘 때가 되면 호르몬이 자연스레 분비되지만 보충제를 먹으면 효과가 더 좋을 것이다. 멜라토닌은 다른 복용 호르몬에 비해 건강에 악영향을 끼치지 않는 편이나 두통, 현기증, 짜증, 다음날 아침 어지럼증을 유발할 수는 있다는 점에 유의하자. 주말이 아니면 복용하지 않는 편이 좋다.
- 경구투여가 가능한 약이나 사탕 형태로 혀 밑에서 녹여 먹는 종류가 있다. 피부에 바르는 크림 형태로도 판매되니 고려해보자. 일반적으로 자기 위해 0.3~0.5mg이 필요하다. 우리 몸의 경우 매일 0.3mg 이하의 멜라토닌을 분비하기 때문에 막 복용을 시작했다면 0.1mg 이하로 시작해서 자신에게 걸맞는(성인의 경우 최대 3mg) 양까지 조절하도록 한다.[14]
- 멜라토닌은 다른 약과 상호작용할 수도 있다. 항우울제, 항정신약물, 혈압조절제 등을 복용하고 있다면 사전에 의사와 상담하는 것이 좋다.
- 병원에 가야 할 때를 알기. 만약 하루에 7~8시간을 충분히 자는데도 아침에 기운이 나지 않는다면, 한 번 병원에 가서 진찰을 받아보는 것이 좋다. 어쩌면 무호흡증, 하지 불안 증후군, 불면증, 기면증 등의 수면 장애 증상을 겪고 있는 것일 수도 있다.[19]광고
- 애완동물 방 밖으로 내보내기. 애완동물은 당신과 수면 주기가 다른 경우가 많다. 밤에 돌아다니고 갑자기 일어날 수 있으며 소음도 낸다. 이런 활동이 당신의 숙면을 방해할 수 있으니 사전에 방 밖으로 내보내 더 편하게 잘 수 있게 하자.[25]
- 실온 낮추기. 일반적으로 18~22도가 적절하며, 이 범위 바깥으로 벗어나면 너무 춥거나 더워서 수면을 방해받을 수 있다.[28]
- 자는 자세 바꿔보기. 당신이 평생 등을 대고 누워 잤다고 해서 그 자세가 가장 자기 좋은 자세라는 법은 없다. 배를 대고 자보는 것도 한 번 시도는 해볼 수 있을 것이다. 굳이 등을 대고 자야한다면, 이번에는 베개 등을 등이나 무릎 아래에 높아 편안함을 유지하는 상태로 자보도록 한다.[34]광고
- 물 마시기. 자게 되면 땀을 흘리며 호흡을 통해 수분을 잃게 된다. 따라서 아침에 일어나면 먼저 물 한 잔을 마셔 수분을 보충하는 것을 우선 순위로 삼도록 하라. 물을 마시면, 하루를 기분 좋게 준비할 수 있을 것이다.[39]
- 커피 마시기. 저녁 때는 카페인을 피하는 것이 좋지만 아침에는 하루를 기분 좋게 시작할 수 있는 방법이기도 하다. 다만 1~2컵이 적당하니 너무 많이 마시지는 않는다. 만약 예약식 커피 포트가 있다면 알람이 울리기 몇 분 전에 커피를 끓이도록 예약을 해놓는다. 향긋한 커피 냄새가 아침을 즐겁게 시작할 수 있게 해줄 것이다.[40]
- 운동하기. 아침에 운동하는 것만큼 몸을 잠깨게 하는 방법이 없다. 유산소 운동, 스트레칭, 조깅을 통해 아침을 시작해보자. 추가적으로 운동을 하는 사람들이 밤에 더 숙면을 취할 수 있다고 한다. 아침은 기운차게 시작하고 밤에는 깊게 잘 수 있으니 얼마나 좋은가.[45]
