How to Perform Ghusl After Menstruation

In Islam, ghusl is a major ablution, or washing, that must be performed after certain circumstances, such as after your menstrual phase (period) ends. Once you get in the habit, this will come naturally to you. If you are short on time, you can do what is known as “obligatory ghusl”, which only includes the essential steps. However, you may prefer to set time aside to perform a complete ghusl. Whichever you choose, there are simple steps to take once you’re in the shower. Just make sure to make an intention to become pure before beginning ghusl.

Remove all jewelry and cosmetics. In ghusl, the water must touch every part of your body. Take care to remove anything that touches your skin so that there is no barrier between you and the water. - It’s preferable to use clean, running water for ghusl. If you don’t live in an area where clean water is available, you may use other water.
- You can cleanse yourself as usual before performing ghusl. Use shampoo and soap as normal, and then move onto ghusl.

Allow the water to run over your entire body at least once. After rinsing your mouth and nose, allow the water to flow over the rest of your body. Make sure that the water reaches every part of your body. Purification won’t happen if every part of your body isn’t touched by water. This includes your scalp!
