The Flying Burrito Brothers var ei amerikansk countryrockgruppe som blei skipa i 1968 i California av dei to tidlegare The Byrds-medlemmane Gram Parsons og Chris Hillman.[1]

Gruppa spelte ei elektrifisert form av country og var svært stilskapende, både musikalisk og visuelt. Med dei to første albuma sine The Gilded Palace of Sin (1969) og Burrito Deluxe (1970) sette dei standarden for det ein seinare kom til å kalla countryrock.

Det nyskapande i musikken til Burritos Brothers var måten dei kombinerte den kjenslevare intensiteten til countrymusikken med krafta og verkemidla til rocken. I tillegg til Gram Parsons sin song var lydbildet til bandet prega av «Sneaky» Pete Kleinow sin steelgitar og Chris Hillman si koring. Dei andre bandmedlemmane på dei to første albuma var Chris Ethridge (på The Gilded Palace of Sin) og Bernie Leadon og Michael Clarke (på Burrito Deluxe).

Gram Parsons og Chris Hillman skreiv dei fleste songane. Blant dei meste kjende songane er «Christine's Tune», «Sin City», «Juanita», «Hot Burrito #1», «Lazy Days» og «Cody, Cody». I tillegg til eigne komposisjonar spelte dei ein del coverversjonar som blant andre The Rolling Stones sin «Wild Horses» (som Parsons fekk løyve av Keith Richards til å spela inn eit år før Stones sjølv gav han ut på albumet Sticky Fingers) og James Carrs sin «At the Dark End of the Street».

Gruppa fekk aldri noko stort kommersielt gjennombrot, men blei lagt merke til av artistar som Bob Dylan og The Rolling Stones. I tillegg til musikken blei The Flying Burrito Brothers kjend for dei fantastiske scenekostyma sine laga av Nudie Cohn, som tidlegare hadde laga kostyme til stjerner som Elvis Presley og Merle Haggard. Parsons sine kostyme var det mest iaugefallande med broderi av marijuanablad og andre narkotiske plantar.

Parsons forlét gruppa etter at dei gav ut Burrito Deluxe, og dette førte til at kreativiteten til gruppa blei skadelidende. Chris Hillman slutta i gruppa nokre år etter Parsons.Kleinow gjekk ut av grupppa for å bli studiomusika, medan Leadon forlét henne for å grunnleggja The Eagles.[2] Al Perkins og Kenny Wertz erstatta dei på ein siste turné hausten 1971. Gruppa gav ut Last of the Red Hot Burritos, eit konsertalbum frå turneen som blei godt motteke, i mai 1972.[3]

Gruppa blei oppløyst i 1972, men gjenoppretta i 1975 med ny besetning. Gruppa har fortsett fram til i dag med ulike namn. The Flying Burrito Brothers har vore ei stor inspirasjonskjelde for mange alternative country-artistar, som Ryan Adams, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Steve Earle og Beachwood Sparks.
