Georgiy Daneliya
Soviet film director and screenwriter (1930–2019)
Georgiy Daneliya (Georgian: გიორგი დანელია Giorgi Danelia; Russian: Гео́ргий Никола́евич Дане́лия; 25 August 1930 – 4 April 2019), also known as Giya Daneliya, was a Soviet and Russian movie director and screenwriter. He was best known for directing the movies Walking the Streets of Moscow (1963), Afonya (1975), Mimino (1977), Autumn Marathon (1979) and Kin-dza-dza! (1986). He was named a People's Artist of the USSR in 1989.
Daneliya was born in Tbilisi, the capital city of the Georgian SSR. In February 2019, he was in hospital with pneumonia. On 4 April 2019, he died of respiratory and heart failure in Moscow. He was 88.[1]
