Creating Your First Facebook Post
Install the Facebook app on your phone or tablet (or go to https://facebook.com in a web browser) and create an account. Once you're signed in, tap the "What's on your mind?" box at the top of the feed and type your post. Attach photos, videos, and other content if you'd like, then click "Post."
Steps
- 1Install the Facebook app. If you've never used Facebook on your Android, iPhone, or iPad, you'll usually need to install the app. First, check your home screen or app list for a blue and white "F" icon—if you see it, you don't have to download anything! If not, here's how you can get it:
- Android
- Open the Play Store app in your app list.
- Type facebook into the search bar and press the Enter or Search key.
- Tap Facebook (the blue and white icon).
- Tap Install and follow the on-screen instructions.[1]
- iPhone & iPad
- Open the App Store app on your Home screen.
- Tap the Search icon at the bottom-right.
- Type facebook.
- Tap Facebook (the blue and white icon).
- Tap GET and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Android
Open the Facebook app. Now that you've installed it, you will find it on your Home screen or app list.- If you aren't logged into Facebook, enter your email address (or phone number) and password to log in.
- Facebook is available for iOS in the App Store and for Android in the Google Play Store.

- If you've never used Facebook before, here's how to create an account:
- Tap Create New Facebook Account.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your name, birth date, gender, and other info.
- Enter your mobile phone number or tap Sign up with email address.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to create a strong password and complete the signup process. You'll then receive an email or text message containing instructions to verify your account.[2]
- Once your account is created, you can fill out your profile, add a profile photo, and find friends and family.
- If you've never used Facebook before, here's how to create an account:
- 4Tap What's on your mind, (name)?. You'll see this at the top of your feed. When you create a Facebook post from here, it will appear on your own timeline and in the feeds of people you're friends with.
- Alternatively, if you want to create a post on a friend's timeline, or a business or public figure's page, tap the search bar at the top of the screen, type their name, and tap them in the search results. You can then tap the What's on your mind? box on their page.
Type your post. You can now type whatever you'd like to say into the box.- You can also add a colored background by tapping one of the color blocks below the text box.
Add more content to your post. If you want to add more to your post, tap one of the options below the text field. You may need to swipe up to reveal all available options, and the options will differ depending on whose timeline you're posting on.- Photo/Video: Allows you to select a photo or video from your device to upload to the post.
- Tag People: Allows you to select a friend or group of friends to tag in the post. Tagged friends will see the post on their pages.
- Check in: Allows you to add an address or a location to your post.
- Feeling/Activity: Allows you to select an emotion or activity to add to the post.
- You can also add a Life event, Live video, GIF, or a nonprofit.
- 7Choose who can see your post. By default, anything you post on a friend or business's timeline will be visible to anyone who can view that timeline. However, when you're posting on your own timeline, you can control who can see your post.
- In the typing area, tap the drop-down menu that says Public, Friends, Custom, or similar.
- Select Friends to limit your posts to your friends only. Alternatively, you can select another option like Only me to make your post private, or Friends except to hide the post from specific friends.[3]
Tap Post. Your post will be added to your timeline. Or, if you began by going to a friend or business's page, your post will appear there.

Go to https://www.facebook.com/ in a web browser. You can use any web browser to post on Facebook, including Edge, Safari, and Chrome. default, your home page should be your feed.[4]- If you're already signed in to Facebook, you'll see your news feed.
- 2Sign in or create an account. If you already have a Facebook account, enter your login information and click Log In. If you're new to Facebook, click Create new account and follow the on-screen instructions.[5]

- Alternatively, if you want to create a post on a friend's timeline, or a business or public figure's page, type their name into the search bar at the top, then click the person or business in the search results. You can then click the What's on your mind? box on their page.
- 4Create your post. Type what you'd like to say in the post box. You can also add a colored background by clicking one of the color blocks below the text box.
- Colored backgrounds are only supported for posts of 130 characters or fewer.
- 5Add more content to your post. If you want to add more to your post, click one of the options located below the post box. The options vary depending on whether you're posting on your own timeline or somebody else's.
