The 1999–2000 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season was very destructive for southern Africa and Madagascar. There were nine named storms, of which four reached tropical cyclone intensity, or with maximum sustained winds of at least 120 km/h (75 mph). The most notable storm was Cyclone Leon–Eline, which lasted 29 days, the longest on record in the basin. It struck both Madagascar and Mozambique, causing the worst disaster in the latter country in a century. Cyclone Hudah struck the same areas about a month later. Cyclone Connie dropped torrential rainfall on Réunion. Both tropical storms Astride and Gloria also struck Madagascar during the season.
