A "normal" atom is electrically neutral. It has an equal number of negatively charged electrons and positively charged protons, so its total charge is zero. If this atom loses or gains electrons, however, it has an electrical charge. Positive ions (cations) and negative ions (anions) can combine to form an ionic compound that is once again electrically neutral. These ionic compounds are named according to strict rules, so once you learn them, it's always possible to write the compound's chemical formula.

Writing Formulas for Simple Binary Compounds

The -ous version always refers to the ion with the lesser charge, and the -ic version refers to the ion with the greater charge.
