Because avocado trees need lots of foliage to ensure a high amount of fruit, they don’t need a lot of pruning. However, your tree may need some minimal pruning to maintain easy tree access, balance, and enough sun exposure. If your tree needs major re-shaping, some heavy pruning may be necessary. In this article, we’ll teach you everything you need to know about how to prune an avocado tree, when to prune it, and how to care for your tree afterwards.

Trimming an Avocado Tree

Use hand pruners and loppers to cut back any dead or diseased branches from your avocado tree. Thin out the canopy so the lower branches get adequate sunlight, and trim branches from all sides of the tree to keep it balanced. Do heavy pruning in spring and early summer to prevent the tree from going into shock.

If you’re pruning multiple trees, be sure to disinfect your tools between each tree.

   • Use hand pruners for branches less than 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. These tools are small and are perfect for removing smaller branches in the tree’s canopy to let the sun shine through. Avocado hand pruners have rounded tips to prevent damaging the fruit.
