Plant and Grow an Avocado Seed in Soil: A Step-by-Step Guide

Fill a large jar or tumbler with water. Take a clear jar, glass, or tumbler and rinse it out well so it’s nice and clean. Poke 3 toothpicks into the seed and suspend it above the water. An avocado seed has a flattened, broad end and a slightly narrower, rounded end. Hold the seed and push 3 toothpicks into the center between the two ends. Space the toothpicks out evenly in the pit. Change the water every 2-3 days. Check the water in the glass often. If it gets so low that the end of the seed isn’t submerged just below the surface, top it off so the seed stays in contact with the water. - If you ever see any slime or gunk in the water, swap it out immediately.

Trim the stem to about 3 inches (7.6 cm) once it’s 6–7 inches (15–18 cm) tall. After about 6-8 weeks, the avocado seed will split open and you’ll see a shoot form at the top and roots start to come out of the bottom. Wait until the top stem gets at least 6–7 inches (15–18 cm) and then use a pair of scissors to trim the stem back.

Place the pot in a sunny window. If the leaves of your avocado plant turn brown or look dead at the tips, there may be too much salt in the soil. Pour water into the pot and let it flow freely through the soil and flush out the excess salt. Let it drain for a few minutes and you should be good to go!
