When you are farther ahead in the game, make 1 main home with many smaller homes across the world. If you ever venture too far from home, you can always stumble on a mini house to stay the night. Be sure to have at least a bed and a chest with half a stack food, half a stack of torches, and a few stone tools.
If you have a chest (which is a three by three wood square with a hole in the middle), put all your valuables in it because if you die, the valuables will still be in your chest. Just mark it with a large pillar so it's easy for you to find when you respawn.
NEVER DIG STRAIGHT DOWN! If you do, there will be a high chance of either falling into lava or through an open gap and dying from fall damage. Don't dig straight up, either! There could be gravel and you could suffocate that way.
Keep your inventory organized. It will then be easy to locate items when you need them. For example: food items in one column, precious items like diamonds in another, notch apples in another, and so on.
