- 研究毒栎时要小心。避免毒栎皮疹的一个好办法是,从不触摸任何你怀疑是毒栎的植物。为了足够近的辨别植物,你可以借助木棒或戴手套来近距离的研究。
- 如果植物被证实是毒栎,一定要用肥皂和水来清洗任何与它接触过的东西。
- 观察叶子。不管是灌木还是攀缘藤蔓,毒栎都是三叶叶片结构。也就是说,叶子是以三片为一组长在枝干上的。叶子边缘呈波浪状或圆齿状。

- 检查颜色。叶子正面一般为油绿色。但根据植物的健康程度和季节,叶子也可能是淡黄色、淡红色或淡褐色。叶子背面会更暗,绿色会更浅,看起来更像天鹅绒。[4]

- 注意花或浆果。毒栎在春天会开黄绿色的小花,在夏天和秋天也会结出淡绿色的浆果。[6]
