The ABCs of Fanfiction

It can be tough to get your footing in the world of fanfiction—with all the different terms and abbreviations out there, how are you supposed to keep everything straight? Here’s a quick breakdown of some common terms you might run into:

  • Fandom: A fan community for a specific franchise or fictional universe (e.g., the One Piece fandom, the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom, etc.).
  • Genre: A smaller category used to label and classify different types of fanfiction. In some cases, genre refers to the type of romantic pairing a fic covers (or if it has any romantic content at all). In other cases, genre refers to labels that describe the plot, like fluff (happy, wholesome content) or angst (sad, upsetting content).
  • Trope: A theme or device that’s used over and over again in the world of fanfiction, like sharing a bed, hanahaki disease, and arranged marriage/marriage of convenience.
  • Canon: The official content of a fictional universe as established by the original creators.
  • Fanon: Elements of a fictional universe that are unconfirmed by the original creators but are believed/accepted as fact within the fan community.
  • Alternate universe (AU): A fictional world that exists outside of the canon material. In AU fics, the author takes established characters and places them in a completely different universe—some especially popular options include coffee shop AUs, soulmate AUs, and high school AUs.
  • Crossover: A fic that combines characters from multiple fandoms. For example, a story that includes both Spider-Man and Harry Potter would be a crossover.
  • Y/N: A genre of fanfiction that allows readers to stick themselves into a fanfiction alongside their favorite characters. “Y/N” stands for “your name,” and the reader is expected to read their own name when “Y/N” shows up in the fic.
  • OC: An Original Character, or a character that the author themselves created who is independent of the original show/movie/franchise.
