Common Cat Colorings

  • Solid: All of the fur is a single, solid color
  • Tabby: A stripe or brindle pattern; can occur with a variety of fur colors and combinations
  • Tortoiseshell: Random color pattern featuring shades of cream, red, and black fur; cats with a unique color distribution but a tabby coat pattern are known as “torbies”
  • Calico: A mixture of cream, red, and black fur (considered a subset of tortoiseshell)
  • Van:Mostly white fur white splotches of color around the tail and head
  • Tuxedo: White fur on the paws, neck, stomach, feet, and chest (and occasionally on the face)
