How to Use Voice Control on iPhone or iPad

This How.com.vn teaches you how to control your iPhone or iPad using Voice Control. Voice Control is a new (iOS 13 and later) accessibility feature that allows you to do nearly anything on your phone or tablet by saying what you want to do aloud.

Method 1
Method 1 of 3:

Setting up Voice Control

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Open your iPhone or iPad's Settings icon.
You'll find this app on the home screen, in a folder, or by searching.
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
It's the blue icon with a circle and outline of a person inside.
  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Scroll down and tap Voice Control.
It's in the second group of settings.
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Tap Set Up Voice Control.
It's the blue link at the top of the screen.
    • If you've already set up Voice Control, you'll see a switch at the top of the menu instead. This switch will be On (green) if Voice Control is enabled, and Off (gray) if disabled. You can quickly toggle this switch on and off at any time to enable or disable Voice Control.
  5. Step 5 Review the "Welcome" screen and tap Continue.
  6. Step 6 Review the "What can I say?"
screen and tap Continue. This screen gives you a few examples of things you can say to control your phone or tablet.
  7. How.com.vn English: Step 7 Choose whether to share Voice Control data.
If you're okay with sharing snippets of what you say with Apple, tap the blue Allow button. If not, tap the Don't Allow link.
    • Now that you've gone through the initial setup process for Voice Control, you can quickly enable or disable the feature by toggling the "Voice Control" switch on or off.

Method 2 of 3:

Using Voice Commands

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Turn on Voice Control if it isn't on already.
You'll know Voice Control is enabled when you see a blue microphone icon at the top-right corner of your screen beside the clock. If you don't see the icon, you can ask Siri to turn it on for you or follow these steps:
    • Open Settings.
    • Tap Accessibility.
    • Tap Voice Control.
    • Slide the "Voice Control" switch to the On (green) position.
  2. Step 2 Say "Show me what to say."
Just to get started, say this into your iPhone or iPad to display a list of example phrases you can use to control your phone or tablet.
  3. Step 3 Say "Tap Done."
Because you said "Tap Done," Voice Control will tap the Done button to close the window. When you're moving around your iPhone or iPad, you can say "Tap (button name)" to tap buttons as you would with a finger.
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Enable a Voice Command overlay.
Though saying "Tap Done'" worked in the previous step, you may run into trouble describing what you want to tap in non-Apple apps. For example, saying "Tap Menu" in Instagram won't open the menu. In this c, case, you'll want to enable an overlay with names or numbers that you can say aloud. To turn on an overlay:
    • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control.
    • Scroll down and tap Overlay.
    • Select Item Numbers if you want small numbers to appear over icons and tabs. For example, if the number 2 appears on top of the menu icon that you want to tap, you can open it by saying "Tap 2." You could choose Numbered Grid as an alternative if a grid behind the numbers would help you.
    • Select Item Names if you want to speak the names of each icon and tab. For example, if the word "Menu" appears over the menu icon, you could say "Tap Menu."
    • Once the overlay is enabled, names or numbers will appear over each item you can tap. You can then tap the item by saying "Tap 2" (replacing "2" with the overlaid number or name).
  5. Step 5 Say "Open (app name)" to launch an app.
You can open apps from anywhere on your phone or tablet.
    • If you'd like to return to the Home screen to browse apps, you can say "Go to Home screen."
    • Say "Close (app name)" to close an app.
  6. Step 6 Say "Swipe (left/right/up/down)" to use swiping gestures.
Any direction you'd normally swipe can be replicated with a voice command.
    • For a full list of gestures, go to Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control > Customize Commands and tap Basic Gestures and/or Advanced Gestures.
    • See this method to learn how to view all possible commands and even create your own.

You'll find this app on the home screen, in a folder, or by searching.
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Scroll down and tap Accessibility.

For example, if you wanted to make a voice command that types your email address into a blank, type enter my email address.
  7. How.com.vn English: Step 7 Tap the Action menu.
A list of actions you can evoke with this command will appear.
  8. How.com.vn English: Step 8 Create an action for your voice command.
    Here are some examples:[1]
    • Let's say again that you want your email address to appear in the active field when you say "enter my email address." Tap Insert Text in the list of actions, type your email address into the blank, and then tap the back button. If you only want this to occur in one app, tap Application and then choose that app.
    • If you want to create a gesture that taps the screen three times, tap Run Custom Gesture, and then tap the "New Gesture" screen three times. Tap Stop when you're finished, and then tap Save.
  9. How.com.vn English: Step 9 Select an existing command.
There are several commands on the "Customize Commands" menu organized into categories. Tap a category to view its associated voice commands, and then tap one of the commands to toggle it on or off.
    • Tapping a command also displays a list of phrases you can use to activate the command. For example, if you tap Text Editing and select Cut that, you'll see a list of phrases like "Cut this" and "Cut selection."
    • Each command offers the option to require confirmation after you say it aloud. To turn this feature on for a command, slide its corresponding switch to the On position.
