How to Use Calm App on iPhone or iPad

This How.com.vn teaches you how to get started with Calm, the popular meditation and sleep app, on an iPhone or iPad. Though most Calm features require a paid subscription, a free 7-day trial period is available to all new users.

Part 1 of 6:

Setting Up Calm

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Install Calm on your iPhone or iPad.
    If you haven’t yet installed the app, you can download it for free from the App Store. Here’s how to get it:
    • Open the App Store

    • Tap Search at the bottom-right corner.
    • Type calm into the search bar and tap the Search key.
    • Tap GET next to ″Calm″ (the app with a blue icon that says ″Calm″ in white letters.″
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

    If you’re still in the App Store, tap OPEN to launch the app. You can also open it by tapping the Calm icon on your home screen.

    You can select as many goals as you wish.

    Select your desired account creation method, then follow the on-screen instructions to create a Calm account.

    You can buy a subscription at any time.

    If you’d like to receive notifications from Calm when it’s time to practice meditation or complete other tasks, tap OK on the pop-up, and then tap Allow. Calm is now installed and ready to use.

Getting a Free Trial

    It’s the blue icon that says ″Calm″ in white letters. You’ll usually find it on the home screen.
    • Most of Calm’s features require a paid subscription. But don’t worry if you’re not ready to commit—Calm offers a 7-day free trial. You must cancel your trial before the end of the 7-day period to avoid being charged for a year subscription.[1]
    • If you don’t want to sign up for the trial or subscribe to premium features, you can still enjoy Calm’s relaxation techniques, one free Sleep program, and the 7 Days of Calm basic mindfulness feature.

    It’s at the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Scroll down and tap Unlock Calm Premium.

    This opens an App Store screen that gives you details about the trial.
    • It’s a good idea to write down the expiration date that appears on the screen.

    The steps to do this vary depending on your settings, but you’ll usually have to enter a passcode or use Touch ID to confirm. Once the subscription is active, you’ll see a confirmation message. Now that you’re using Calm Premium, you can use all of Calm’s most popular features.

Using Daily Calm

    It’s the blue icon that says ″Calm″ in white letters. You’ll usually find it on the home screen. Daily Calm is a set of three 10-minute meditation sessions you can use to start your practice.[2]
    • Daily Calm is only available to premium users.

    It’s at the top of the Calm home screen. Today’s first 10-minute meditation will begin to play.
    • To adjust the volume of the sounds playing in the background, tap the first icon at the bottom-left corner of the screen (it looks like several volume sliders), then drag the slider to the desired level.
    • To pause the audio playback, tap the pause button at the bottom-center part of the screen (two vertical lines).
  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Follow along with the recorded meditation.
    Once the meditation is complete, you’ll come to a screen that tells you you’ve completed the first session.

    It’s at the top-right corner of the screen. This brings you to your profile, which displays some information about your meditation streaks (days in a row you’ve done a meditation in Calm). Since you’ve completed your first meditation, your ″longest streak″ now reports ″1 day.″

    It’s at the top-right corner of the screen. This closes your profile and returns you to the Calm home screen.

    This starts the second of the three daily meditations.

Meditating in Calm

    It’s at the bottom-center part of the screen. A list of meditations and topics will appear.

    There are several options from which to choose.
    • If you don’t have a premium subscription or free trial, you can only select 7 Days of Calm, which is the first option in the list.
    • If you have a subscription or are in the trial period, you can use the list of categories at the top of the screen. Swipe left on the list to see all options, then tap a topic that interests you.
    • If you’re just getting started, tap Beginners at the top of the screen to see a list of meditations tailored to those new to meditation.
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Tap a meditation to learn more about it.
    Scroll down the list to see which aspects of your life can be positively affected by the selected meditation.
    • If you’re not interested in the selected meditation, tap the X at the top-right corner of the screen to close the screen.

    The meditation will begin to play immediately.
  6. How.com.vn English: Step 6 Follow along with the recorded meditation.
    After the meditation is complete, you’ll see a message that tells you you’ve completed your session.

    If you find a meditation you like and want to return to quickly in the future, tap the heart icon near the bottom-right corner of the playback screen. You can then find your favorite. All favorited meditations will be added to the ″My (heart)″ category at the top of the Meditate screen.

Falling Asleep with Calm

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Open Calm.
    It’s the blue icon that says ″Calm″ in white letters. You’ll usually find it on the home screen.
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Tap Sleep.
    It’s the second icon at the bottom of the screen. A list of sleep meditations, called ″Sleep Stories,″ will appear.
  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Browse available Sleep Stories.
    There are several options from which to choose.
    • If you don’t have a premium subscription or free trial, you can only select The Waterfall or Sleep Stories for kids: The Secret Lagoon.[3]
    • If you have a subscription or are in the trial period, you can use the list of categories at the top of the screen. Swipe left on the list to see all options, then tap a topic that interests you.
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Tap a story when you’re ready to fall asleep.
    A pop-up will appear, letting you know that your screen and phone/tablet sounds will turn off when the story is complete.
  5. How.com.vn English: Step 5 Tap OK to start the story.
    Now all you’ll need to do is lay down, relax, and follow the instructions (if applicable) in the story.

Setting Reminders

    It’s the blue icon that says ″Calm″ in white letters. You’ll usually find it on the home screen.
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Tap the profile icon.
    It’s at the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Scroll down and tap Mindfulness Reminder.
    A blue window will appear.
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Slide the ″Reminder Off″ switch to the On icon position.
  5. How.com.vn English: Step 5 Tap Reminder Time.
    Your iPhone or iPad’s time selection screen will appear.
  6. How.com.vn English: Step 6 Enter the time you want Calm to remind you to meditate.
    Be sure to select AM or PM so you aren’t reminded at an inopportune time.
  7. How.com.vn English: Step 7 Tap anywhere on the blue screen.
    This closes the time selection screen.
  8. How.com.vn English: Step 8 Tap Set a Reminder.
    It’s the green button at the bottom of the screen. Calm will send you a notification at the selected time, reminding you to complete your daily meditation practice.
