How to Turn Off RTT on iPhone, Plus Troubleshooting and More

Learn to turn off real-time text or change your RTT settings on an iPhone

RTT, or real-time text, is an accessibility feature that’s built into all iPhones running iOS 10 or later.[1] It allows you to communicate using text during a phone call—without having to use an external TTY device. If you want to turn RTT off, you can do it easily in your iPhone’s Settings menu. We’ll also explain how to troubleshoot if you’re still seeing RTT with your calls, plus how to change individual settings in the RTT menu.

Things You Should Know

  • Turn off RTT on your iPhone by going to Settings > Accessibility > RTT/TTY and toggling off Software RTT.
  • If you still see RTT on your calls even after you’ve turned it off, you may need to reset your iPhone’s settings to default.
  • You can adjust individual settings, like whether you answer calls as RTT by default, in the RTT/TTY menu.

Troubleshooting

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Make sure the other caller has RTT turned off.
Some users report having RTT interrupt their voice calls even if it’s turned off in Settings. This can happen if the person you’re talking to has RTT activated on their phone, even if you don’t. Ask the other person if RTT is enabled on their phone, and talk them through how to turn it off.
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Reset your iPhone’s settings if you can’t get it to turn off.
Sometimes RTT will continue to run during calls even if you’ve switched it off. Once you verify that the person you’re talking to doesn’t have it enabled on their phone, try resetting your phone’s settings and see if that fixes the issue. To do it:[2]
    • Open Settings, then tap General.
    • Select Transfer or Reset iPhone.
    • Select Reset All Settings. You may be prompted to enter your passcode. This will return all your iPhone’s settings to their defaults. You shouldn’t lose any apps, media, or data, but you might want to back up your phone first just in case.

Managing Your RTT Settings

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 You can always turn RTT back on in Settings.
If you need to use RTT again, you can easily turn it on by opening Settings > Accessibility > RTT/TTY and toggling it back on.
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Adjust your RTT settings in the RTT/TTY menu.
Once you’ve turned RTT on, you can finetune your RTT settings. A list of new options will appear when the toggle next to Software RTT is set to the On position. For example:[3]
    • Leave Send Immediately enabled if you want your text to appear in real-time as you type. If you turn this feature off, you’ll have to complete and send each message before the other person can see it.
    • Toggle Answer Calls as Muted on or off. This will determine whether or not the other person can hear your voice when you answer the call. Emergency calls are always unmuted by default.
    • Turn Live Captions on or off. When this option is enabled, your words will be automatically translated to text as you speak during RTT calls. Just keep in mind that Live Captions aren’t always accurate!
    • Enable or disable notifications. When Show Notifications is on, you’ll get notifications about messages sent as part of your conversation while you’re not on the call.
    • Turn on Answer All Calls as RTT/TTY to make all calls RTT by default.
    • You can also turn on Hardware TTY in the RTT/TTY menu if you have an external TTY device.

What Is RTT?

  1. How.com.vn English: RTT is an accessibility feature that lets you send text during a phone call.
When RTT is enabled, you can choose to place or answer calls as RTT rather than regular voice calls. If you and the person on the other end of the line both have RTT enabled, there won’t be any audio on the call unless you tap the Microphone icon to enable simultaneous text and audio.
    • RTT is a useful feature for callers who are hearing or speech impaired.
    • RTT is an alternative to TTY, which involves using an external device to send and receive text messages over the phone during a call.
