Do you desperately need your hair trimmed, but don't want to pay at the salon? Or, are you in-between cuts and need to look good fast? Here's a basic guide on how to trim your own hair at home for less. Although you should never give yourself a full haircut [for example, having waist-length hair and trying to cut it to your shoulders], it is quite possible to give yourself a salon-quality trim -- about 1–3 inches (2.5–7.6 cm) off of the ends. This guide will help.

Be sure to select hair from the bottom section and on one-side of the scalp or the other, but not the middle. This will be your guide cut.[3]
    • In this case, your freehand will be the hand that you will not be using to hold the sheers or scissors.
    • You will be doing this repeatedly, so be sure to maintain consistency with each pinch.

This time, as you run the comb the length of your hair follow it with your pinched fingers.[5] Leave approximately a quarter-inch of a gap between your fingers and the comb and be sure to maintain a consistent pinch.
    • Pinch too loosely and the hair will not sit right and will result in an uneven trim.
    • Not much tension is necessary, so don't feel like you need to pinch very tightly either.
    • Do not use a brush for this step.

If you have managed to hold your fingers properly throughout the comb--and the slide--you will be able to see uneven growth at the ends.
    • Practice this over-and-over and be sure to maintain consistent motions.
    • The more consistent you can be with this, the more consistent your trim will be.

    • The amount of hair trimmed is up to you.
    • Standing in front of a mirror helps when you are trimming your own hair. It can, however, be quite difficult getting used to working with your mirror image.

This portion should be immediately next to the portion of hair that you just worked with and should include about 25-percent of the hair that you just trimmed.

If you don’t have much experience cutting your own hair, I would recommended letting a professional cut it for you. Because your hair is already so long, you may have a challenging time performing an even, blunt cut.

After you’ve shampooed, detangled, and sectioned your hair, start with the bottom section, pinch the hair followed by running the comb down the length of your hair, and trim off the desired length, whether it’s 1 or 2 inches. Repeat these steps section by section, using each previously cut piece of hair as your guide.

      Article SummaryX

Trimming your hair at home is a good way to save money and maintain your hairstyle between haircuts. To get started, wash your hair and gently towel-dry it so that it’s still a little damp. Keep a spray bottle on hand to moisten your hair again if it starts to dry out. Cover your shoulders with a towel or hairdresser’s cape to keep the trimmed hair off your skin and clothes. Use a brush or a wide-tooth comb to remove any tangles, then comb your hair straight back. Next, use the pointed end of a rat-tail comb or the corner of a regular comb to part your hair from one ear to the other, going across the top of your head. Comb the section you just made forward and secure it with a clip or a hair elastic. Next, create a second section that goes around the back of your head from the bottom of one ear to the other. Secure that section with a clip or elastic as well. Leave the hair underneath that section loose at the back of your neck. Now it’s time to start trimming. Grab a small section of the loose hair from one side of your scalp and pinch it between the index and middle fingers on your non-dominant hand. Slide your fingers down the length of the hair until the amount you want to trim off is visible below your fingers. For instance, if you want to take off 2-3 inches (5.1-7.6 cm), that’s how much hair should be sticking out at the end of the section you pinched. Comb the section of hair straight to remove any remaining tangles, then pinch the hair and slide your fingers down again, making sure your fingers are parallel with the floor. Use sharp, clean hair scissors to trim off the ends that are sticking out from between your fingers. Then, pinch off another section of hair next to the one you just cut, along with a small amount of the first section. Repeat the process, using the first cut as a guide so that the second and subsequent cuts are even. Once you’ve completed the bottom section of your hair, look for any uneven ends and carefully trim them so that your hair is the same length all the way around. Once you’re satisfied, unclip the hair that you sectioned off behind your head and repeat the same steps. Then, do the same with the front section of your hair. If you notice any uneven areas after your hair dries out completely, carefully touch them up with your scissors.
