Steps
Signing up for Publishing
- Open the Google Play console. Go to https://play.google.com/apps/publish/ and sign in with your Gmail address and password if prompted.
- If you already have a Google Play publisher account, skip to the next part.
- Scroll down and check the "I agree" box. It's in the lower-left side of the page.Advertisement
- Click CONTINUE TO PAYMENT. This blue button is at the bottom of the page, just below the "I agree" box.
- Enter your payment details. You need to pay a one-time fee of $25 to publish an app on Google Play. To do so, enter your credit or debit card name, number, expiration date, and security code.
- Click PAY. It's a blue button at the bottom of the page. This will take you to the next section of the publishing profile setup.
- Fill out your account details. Enter your information in the following fields:
- Developer name - The name under which you want to publish apps.
- Email address - This should be the email address you used to sign into the Google Play console.
- Website - Your website's address, if applicable.
- Phone Number - Your current cellphone number.
- Email updates - Check this box if you want to receive updates from Google Play in your email account.
- Click COMPLETE REGISTRATION. It's at the bottom of the page. Doing so will complete the account setup and take you to the Google Play console, where you can begin the app publication process.Advertisement
Adding Your App's Basic Information
- Click All applications. It's a tab in the upper-left side of the page.
- If you don't see All applications in the upper-left side of the page, re-enter https://play.google.com/apps/publish/ in your browser.
- Click CREATE APPLICATION. This blue button is in the upper-right side of the page.
- Select a language. Click the Language drop-down box, then click a language.
- Enter your app's name. Type the name of your app into the "Title" text field.
- Click CREATE. It's at the bottom of the page. This will take you to your app's information page.
- Fill out your app's descriptions. Enter your app's information in the following fields:
- Short description - 80 characters (or less) describing your app's function.
- Full description - Up to 4000 characters describing your app, its function, its features, update history, and so on. Avoid keywords here since they're against the app market's policy.
- Add screenshots of your app. Scroll down, click the Add screenshot box, and select an image from your computer.
- You can add several screenshots for your app.
- Upload images for your app. In the area below the screenshots section, click the following options to upload the relevant photos:
- Add hi-res icon - Lets you select an app icon. This is the icon that will display for the app on phones, tablets, and so on.
- Add feature graphic - Lets you select a banner for your app that will display in the Play Store.
- You can add other promotional material in the Add promo graphic, Add TV banner, and/or Add a 360 degree stereoscopic image sections, but these are optional.
- Link to a video of your app. In the "Promo Video" field below the images section, you can copy the address of a YouTube video of your app in use. This is optional, but recommended if you have the video.
- Select an application type. Click the Select an application type drop-down box, then click a type of application.
- Select an app category. Click the Select a category drop-down box, then click a category (e.g., Beauty).
- Enter your email address. Type your email address into the "Email" text field. This is so that customers can contact you.
- Check the "Not submitting a privacy policy" box. It's in the "Privacy Policy" section near the bottom of the page.
- If you do have a privacy policy on hand, you can copy the policy's link into the "Privacy Policy" text field.
- Scroll up and click SAVE DRAFT. It's a blue button at the top of the page. Now that you've entered your app's information, it's time to fill out the app release information.Advertisement
Uploading Your App File
- Click App releases. This tab is in the upper-left side of the page.
- Click MANAGE PRODUCTION. It's a link on the right side of the page.
- Click CREATE RELEASE. You'll find this blue button on the left side of the page, just below the "Create release" heading.
- Click NOT NOW. It's at the top of the page.
- Click UPLOAD APK. This grey button is in the upper-right side of the page.
- Click BROWSE FILES. It's in the middle of the "Upload new APK to Production" window.
- Select an app APK. Click your app's APK file, then click Open. This will upload the APK to the website.
- APKs typically don't take up a huge amount of space, but you still may need to wait for a few minutes before the uploading is complete.
- Scroll down and click REVIEW. It's a blue button at the bottom of the page. Doing so confirms your upload and completes the app release information form.Advertisement
Setting a Content Rating
- Click the Content rating tab. It's on the far-left side of the page.
- Click CONTINUE. This blue button is in the middle of the page.
- Enter your email address. Type your email address into the "Email address" text field near the top of the page, then type it into the "Confirm email address" text field below.
- Select an app category. Click one of the categories below the "Select your app category" heading in the middle of the page. Doing so will take you to the rating page.
- Fill out the content rating survey. Click the circle next to either "Yes" or "No" for each question. This will include questions regarding your app's violence, sexuality, language, and controlled substance content.
- Click CALCULATE RATING. It's a blue button at the bottom of the page. Clicking it prompts Google Play to generate a rating for your app that is based on your feedback.
- You won't be able to click this button until you have completed every question in the survey.
- Scroll down and click APPLY RATING. It's at the bottom of the page. Doing so will set your app's rating and return you to the main Content Rating page. You can now proceed with determining your app's pricing information.Advertisement
Adding Pricing and Distribution Information
- Click Pricing & distribution. It's a tab on the far-left side of the page.
- Select a pricing option. Click either PAID or FREE at the top of the page in the "This application is" section.
- If you don't have a merchant account with Google Play, you can only select FREE.
- To set up a merchant account, click the set up a merchant account link below the PAID and FREE buttons.
- Check the "Available" circle. It's below the "Countries" heading. This will make your app available for download in all countries.
- You can check circles next to specific countries in the "Unavailable" column if you want to prevent app use in specific countries.
- Select a child-directed preference. In the "Primarily Child-Directed" section, click Yes if your app is primarily for children under 13, or No if your app is not child-directed.
- Select an ad preference. In the "Contains ads" section, click Yes, it has ads if your app has ads in it, or No, it has no ads if there are no ads in your app.
- Scroll down to the "Consent" section. It's near the bottom of the page.
- Check the "Content guidelines" and "Use export laws" boxes. This indicates that your app complies with both Google Play's content guidelines and United States law.
- Scroll all the way up and click SAVE DRAFT. This blue button is at the top of the page. Now that your app's information is complete, it's time to actually publish your app.Advertisement
Publishing Your App
- Click the App releases tab. It's in the upper-left side of the page.
- Click MANAGE PRODUCTION. This option is in the lower-right side of the screen, though you may need to scroll down to see it.
- Click EDIT RELEASE. You'll see this blue button in the upper-right side of the page.
- Scroll down and click REVIEW. It's at the bottom of the page.
- Scroll down and click START ROLLOUT TO PRODUCTION. This option is a blue button in the lower-right side of the page.
