How to Remove an Older Kindle Highlight on a Kindle for iPhone or iPad

Kindle books allow for easy highlighting. However, if you transferred your books from an older, non-touchscreen Kindle to the Kindle iOS app, removing any highlighted text can be more problematic. Luckily, there are some workarounds to get that highlight removed from the book using your Kindle for iOS app.

Method 1
Method 1 of 2:

By Revising the Selected Highlight

  1. 1
Read till the end of the highlighted text you'd like to remove. Although this will vary by length of the text and the situation within the paragraph at which the endpoint is noted (highlights till the end of the paragraph won't show this problem being affected), make sure you can clearly see the white space right after the last word of the highlighted text.
  2. 2
Select the highlight in your Kindle book on your Kindle for iOS app. Much like any other piece of highlighted text, single-tap right on the highlighted text to make your selection. Most often, this will select your highlight plus the word to it's right inside the highlight.
    • If it doesn't highlight the selection, try the other workaround.
  3. 3
Check the highlighting menu. See if there are any x's marked on either of the four highlight colors. Most often with this setup, you won't see any there once you let go of your tap. Your menu will often not show the highlighted color being selected at that point, and you will often notice a difference in that the Kindle will "re-highlight" the word to it's right - and that is what you are looking for "fix".
  4. 4
Find the end point of the selection. Drag the selection line until it includes only the text inside the highlighted portion onscreen. When you fix the highlighted portion by re-selecting the highlighted text, it will often get you around a glitch that will cause this to malfunction inside the app.
  5. 5
Let your menu come up. As expected, upon bringing your finger up from the re-selection process, your x inside one of the colored circles should show up as normal.
  6. 6
Perform a normal highlight removal from the menu. Tap the highlighted color with the X to remove the highlight.

Method 2 of 2:

By Adding Words to the Highlight Then Removing It

  1. 1
Select your highlight in the book you'd like to remove.
  2. 2
Let your Kindle auto-highlight (with the glitch) the text with the next word selected as well.
    • Watch out for run-on highlights with a different highlight immediately after that. If you highlight both after the extension, it'll create a continued highlight, and once you remove the first, you'll end up removing both. If this is the case, continue with the other "glitch fix" instead.
  3. 3
Create the new "glitch-fixed" highlight to highlight this new additional text. You shouldn't have to drag the words to create the fix, but do keep in mind that the text must essentially be non-highlighted for this to work.
  4. 4
Tap the block of text from the glitched fix highlight to re-open the highlight dialog box.
  5. 5
Look for the x to appear if the extra glitch-fix has been highlighted, and tap the highlight color where the X is to remove the highlight. Your X should appear if the extra overlap has been highlighted.
  6. 6
Watch for the text's highlight to be removed after a second or two of delay.
