If you’ve installed a Ring Doorbell recently, you may be wondering how to get the cover off. This is something you will need to do if you want to swap out the faceplate for a different color or if your Ring Doorbell requires you to take out the battery for charging. As long as you have the provided Ring screwdriver to remove the security screw at the bottom of the faceplate, you’ll be able to do it with no problem!

Taking Off and Replacing the Faceplate

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Unscrew the security screw at the bottom of the faceplate.
The Ring Doorbell comes with a special star-shaped screwdriver for taking out the security screw. Insert the tip of the provided screwdriver into the security screw and turn it counterclockwise until the screw comes all the way out.[1]
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Push up from the bottom of the cover with your thumbs until it comes loose.
Place both your thumbs on the bottom of the faceplate and the tips of your index and middle fingers on the front to support it.[3] Leverage the bottom of the cover up and outward until it snaps free.[4]
    • If you are having trouble loosening the faceplate with just your thumbs, you can insert something flat and skinny, such as a butter knife, underneath the bottom edge of the faceplate to pry it up. Just be careful not to use anything too sharp or too big that might damage the cover.

  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Pull the faceplate away from the body to remove it once it is loose.
Grab the cover in your hand and carefully pull it away from the body once you have snapped it free. This will expose the inside of the Ring Doorbell.[5]
    • This will be one fluid motion after you leverage the faceplate loose with your thumbs. Be careful not to let the cover fall.
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Line up the faceplate and snap it back on to the body to replace it.
Align the plastic hook at the top inside edge of the faceplate with the corresponding hole on the body of the doorbell. Place the hook inside the hole, holding the cover at about a 45-degree angle, then snap the bottom of the cover back into place.[6]
    • There are several different colored faceplates for the Ring Doorbell and they are all interchangeable. You can remove and replace them in the same manner whenever you want to change the color of your doorbell.

Tip: You can also find silicone skins online on sites like https://www.amazon.com that just slide on top of everything. You can use these if you want to change the look of your Ring Doorbell, camouflage it, or protect it from the elements.

  5. How.com.vn English: Step 5 Replace the security screw and tighten it all the way with the screwdriver.
Place the security screw back in the hole at the bottom of the faceplate. Screw it back in with the provided screwdriver until it is all the way tight.[7]

Getting the Battery Out

Download Article
  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Remove the security screw at the bottom of the faceplate.
Use the provided Ring screwdriver to loosen the screw at the bottom of the cover by turning it counterclockwise. Take out the screw and set it aside.[9]
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Use your thumbs as levers to push the faceplate up from the bottom.
Put both your thumbs on the bottom of the faceplate and support the front with your index and middle fingers. Push up with your thumbs to pry the bottom of the faceplate free.[10]
    • This is only necessary if your Ring doorbell features a removable battery that you need to take out in order to charge. Other models have a port for the charging cable on the back, so it’s not necessary to remove the cover.
  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Take the faceplate off of the body when you have pried it loose.
Carefully lift the faceplate away from the body. Set it aside somewhere safe.[11]
    • The faceplate will easily lift off once you have loosened the bottom with your thumbs. There is nothing else holding it onto the body. Be careful not to let go of the faceplate once you loosen the bottom edge or it might fall off and hit the ground.
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Press the black tab on the battery while pulling it out towards the bottom.
There is a black rectangular tab on top of the battery at the bottom of the doorbell where it slides out. Press down on this with your index finger while using your thumb and middle finger to slide the battery out from the bottom.[12]
    • Once the battery starts sliding out you can let go of the black tab. This is just the release button.
  5. How.com.vn English: Step 5 Slide the battery back in after it’s charged before replacing the faceplate.
Charge the Ring Doorbell battery and slide it back in the bottom of the doorbell until the black tab snaps back into place and the battery is securely inside. Snap the faceplate back on and replace the security screw with the Ring screwdriver.[13]
    • You can swap out the faceplate at this time if you want to put on a different color.

Tip: It’s a good idea to get a backup battery so you can always have a charged battery ready to go and swap it in whenever the current battery needs charging.

    Expert Answer
Use a T6 torx-head screwdriver if you misplaced the original screwdriver that came with the device. Remove the security screw from the bottom of the cover, turning the screw counter-clockwise. Then, simply lift the cover up and out from the bottom. You can purchase replacement security screws and screwdrivers from Ring or Amazon.

To remove a Ring Doorbell cover, you’ll need the special star-shaped screwdriver that came with your doorbell kit. Use the screwdriver to remove the security screw at the bottom of the faceplate. Then, push up from the bottom of the faceplate until it slides up and off. Once the faceplate snaps away from the body of the doorbell, carefully pull it outward in one fluid motion to remove it. If you need to remove and charge the battery in your Ring Doorbell, press the black tab on the bottom of the battery while pulling the battery downward. Charge the battery, then push it back up into place from the bottom of the doorbell. To replace the cover of the doorbell, insert the hook at the top of the faceplate into the corresponding slot at the top of the doorbell. Hold the faceplate at a 45° angle relative to the doorbell and make sure it is lined up properly, then push it in until it snaps into place. Use the screwdriver to screw the security screw back into place at the bottom of the faceplate.
