Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)

The label “narcissist” gets thrown around a lot, but what exactly is narcissistic personality disorder (NPD)? NPD is a mental health disorder characterized by overly high self-importance, an excessive need for praise, a sense of entitlement, and a lack of empathy. Although narcissists may act better than other people, they’re actually deeply insecure. It’s because of their insecurities that they feel the need to convince everyone else of how great they are all the time, and it’s why they’re so sensitive to any criticisms or perceived slights.

Unfortunately, this constant posturing and avoidance of negative feelings can sometimes cause issues in romantic relationships. Some people with NPD might disregard their partner’s feelings, refuse to take accountability for their mistakes, and prioritize their own wants and needs over their partner’s. If you’re experiencing this with your partner, communicate how you’re feeling and set healthy boundaries so they know what behaviors you’re not okay with. Working with a therapist, both individually and as a couple, can also help.

At the end of the day, narcissists are people, not monsters. Still, because of a narcissist’s insecurities and low self-esteem, they may use unhealthy means to get their needs met, which can end up taking a toll on you. Remember to prioritize your mental health and well-being, and reach out to friends, family members, or a mental health professional if you need support.
