A Closer Look at the Thrilling World of Crushes

What is a crush?
A crush is a slang word for a strong one-sided romantic attraction that one person experiences for another. While crushes are often associated with teens and other young people, anyone can develop a crush at any point in time.

  • Crushes are sometimes one-sided, but they can also be a two-way street.

What is the purpose of crushes?

  • Crushes could be a biological side effect of who we are as people. Some believe that the experience of developing a crush is all about finding a long-term partner, with the intense feelings pushing you closer and closer toward a specific person. Still, crushes come in all shapes and sizes, and people aren’t always attracted to individuals who are single or otherwise “available.”
  • Crushes can help you take a closer look at your ongoing relationship. It’s definitely an uncomfortable experience to develop a crush on someone other than your partner. Still, by taking a deeper dive into this crush help you know for sure if your current relationship is built to last.
    • For instance, you can be confident that your existing relationship is strong if you’re able to keep your crush on the down-low without it impacting your current partnership.

How do I know if someone has a crush on me?

  • They mimic your body language. If someone’s really crushing on you, they might try to “mirror” your behavior, or adjust their body language and/or speech patterns in a way that’s identical to yours. People use “mirroring” to gauge if their crush is interested or not.
  • They get into your personal space. Sure, everyone stands relatively close to one another during a conversation—but someone who’s crushing on you might take it to the next level. From a technical standpoint, they might be less than 18 in (46 cm) away from your face, or make an extra effort to lean into your space.
  • They ask a lot of questions about you. Someone crushing on you will naturally want to learn more about you—and what better way to do that than by asking questions? Pay attention to the flow of your conversations and see if they seem extra curious about you.
  • They bring up little details you mentioned before. Maybe they remember the name of your dog, or mention your favorite sport or activity. Recalling specific details is intentional, and shows that they’re dedicated and attentive to what you share with them.
  • They try to spend time with you. Maybe they seek you out for a group project or hit you up for a weekend hangout. While they might just be looking to spend time as friends, there could also be ulterior (romantic) motives underfoot.
