For example, if someone you don't recognize is leaving/coming to your neighbor's house late at night, you might want to ask them about it just to ensure that they know the person. It is less likely for them to steal valuables. Most people don't carry all of their most prized possessions everywhere. If they can enter your home it is more private and all of your valuables are there. They are less likely to be seen stealing inside.
