Caterpillars, although not a traditional pet, can still be an interesting creature to care for. Most caterpillars are easy to catch and can be kept in a simple cage. One of the interesting parts about keeping a caterpillar as a pet is watching it transform into a butterfly. Most caterpillars can be handled, but you have to be very gentle with them and you need to know what species you're dealing with, since some are venomous. In general, venomous caterpillars will look spiky or fluffy, so smooth ones are pretty reliably safe to handle. Learn to recognize your local venomous species and only handle caterpillars you are certain are safe.
Make sure your caterpillars have enough space to pupate, as some butterflies are born deformed because their cocoons are to close together.
You can keep the butterfly as a pet too, and it can live for a week or longer! I recommend feeding it orange slices.
My caterpillar will not eat unless I clean its home, so clean out any mess from their cage every day.
