What Are Wands Made Of?
In Harry Potter, wands are made of 2 elements: wood and a core. These elements give a wand its magical properties and personality. When a wand picks a witch or wizard, it’ll often navigate toward someone who matches its energy. Take a look at what the most common wood and core types say about a wand and witch or wizard.
Wand woods:
- Cypress wands gravitate toward nobility and loyal behavior. These wands seek those willing to die heroic deaths and put others’ needs above their own.

Core types:
- Dragon heartstrings are the most powerful type of core. Wands with dragon heartstring cores can cast elaborate spells with ease, and they gravitate toward fast-thinking witches and wizards. Dragon cores tend to be the easiest to turn to the Dark Arts.
- Phoenix feathers are the rarest core. Wands with phoenix feather cores are known for casting a wide range of unique and peculiar spells. These wands, however, can act on their own accord and tend to ignore their owners’ wishes if trust isn’t established.
- Unicorn hair produces the most consistent magic. Wands with a unicorn hair core are typically the hardest to turn to the Dark Arts and are the most faithful to their owners. If mishandled, unicorn hair can “die” in a wand and must be replaced.
