Whether you're going to work, hanging out with friends or simply taking a brisk evening stroll through your local park, you can always count on your best pair of trainers to help get you through the day. With all the adversity we face in our day to day life we often overlook the much-needed love to our trainers and by time we notice they're too far gone. Not to worry though - follow these easy step by step instructions to help get your trainers looking brand new again.
Steps
- Remove laces. Remove the laces from the trainers to ensure that you get all the hidden dirt. If you’ve had your trainers for long it may start to become apparent that your laces are frayed and the aglets (top parts of your laces) are breaking off. You may be tempted to buy new trainers or you can see this as an opportunity to express your individuality. Look for different coloured laces and styles that are custom to you!
- Grab a bowl and some warm water. Grab a small bowl and fill it half way with some warm water. Pour in 1–2 tablespoons (14.8–29.6 ml) of bleach and ensure that you are wearing gloves as you don’t want the bleach to come in contact with your skin. If you don’t have any gloves, replace the bleach with standard hand wash. Place the laces into the bowl and allow them to soak for 1-2 minutes so that the dirt starts to soften and break down.
- Take laces out. Take the laces out of the bowl and begin to squeeze to release the soaked-up water in the laces. Rub the laces together in the palm of your hands. By doing so, the friction created allows for the already softened dirt to easily come out - repeat if necessary.
- Remove excess dirt. Grab a paper towel and thoroughly pat down the laces to ensure that they are dry. You may notice that there are still some dirt stains caused by the eyelets of the trainer. An easy remedy to remove this is to grab a soft bristled brush such as a tooth brush and dip it into a soapy mixture. Scrub the parts of the laces that are dirty. Use the tooth brush dipped into the mixture to clean any hidden dirt on the eyelet of the trainers and use a paper towel to dry off any excess water.
- Remove insoles. If you have insoles inside your trainers and want them to be just as clean, remove the insoles and dust off any debris. Place them inside a sink filled with warm water and a couple drops of detergent (can be replaced with a liquid hand wash). You can use a brush or a piece of cloth to scrub away the dirt. Remove the insoles and place them on a towel so that they may dry overnight or however long needed. Do not put them back in your trainers if they are still wet.
- Wipe your trainers down with a clean cloth. This allows for any sort of mud or dirt to be quickly wiped away. Fill a sink halfway with warm water and 1-2 caps of laundry detergent. Wash the cloth in the mixture and squeeze out any water that was retained. With the damp cloth, wipe down the dirty trainers.
- Wipe down and allow to dry. At this point your trainers should be damp and perhaps covered in soap. Use a cloth to wipe down any remaining surplus soap or dirt. This will leave the shoe looking sparkling clean. Ensure that you leave the shoe to dry off naturally overnight.
- Put laces and insoles back in. Once the laces and insoles are completely dry, you can then begin to place them back inside the dry trainers. If there is still an odour coming from an insole, then you can place baking soda on top of the insole to leave overnight and wipe away in the morning.Advertisement
