Who's Who: Gilmore Girls Characters and Cast

Gilmore Girls is a 7-season television series that aired from 2000 to 2007, starting on the WB and ending on the CW. In 2016, Netflix debuted a 4-part miniseries titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life to give fans a look at the characters' lives nearly a decade after the show ended. The series follows Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory in the quaint, sleepy town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. They navigate life, love, relationships, work, and school as a fast-talking coffee-guzzling pair that’s more like best friends than mother and daughter. The show is known for a witty, endearing mix of drama and humor that keeps fans coming back for more. Who are the characters who keep the audience so hooked?

Lorelai Gilmore is played by Lauren Graham. In the show, Lorelai runs a small inn and raises her daughter, Rory, whom she had at 16 years old. Lorelai doesn’t cook and isn’t much of a housekeeper, and she and Rory are often seen eating junk food or grabbing takeout. She’s fun, witty, and works hard. Lorelai has a series of relationships, gets engaged twice, and even ends up marrying Christopher, Rory’s father, on a whim in Paris in season 6. None of her relationships, engagements, or even the marriage, are destined to last (though she does end up with Luke in the A Year in the Life resurgence). Still, Lorelai is an independent, successful businesswoman intent on charting her own path rather than the one her parents laid out for her.

Rory Gilmore is played by Alexis Bledel. Rory is a studious, somewhat shy girl, preferring novels and homework to socializing and parties. She attends Chilton, a prestigious prep school, before going on to Yale University, her grandfather’s alma mater (surprising everyone, including herself, as she’s always dreamed of attending Harvard). Rory is super close with her mom and they do everything together, from shopping to movie nights. Rory grows up on Gilmore Girls, navigating everything from friendships and romances to figuring out what she wants to do with her life.

Emily Gilmore is played by Kelly Bishop. Emily, Lorelai’s mother, is a blue-blooded member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). She spends her days ordering maids around (whom she fires constantly) and organizing and attending charity functions. She disapproves of Lorelai’s lifestyle and constantly critiques her. She’s brash and witty, delivering one-liners that fans will never forget.

Richard Gilmore is played by Edward Herrmann. Richard, Lorelai’s father, works for an insurance company before starting his own consulting business and is constantly traveling for work and having business meetings on the golf green. He bonds with Rory over their love of newspapers and novels.

Luke Danes is played by Scott Patterson. Luke owns Luke’s Diner, where Lorelai and Rory are constantly seen grabbing coffee or meals. Luke seems gruff and grumpy on the exterior but has a heart of gold and is always there for the Gilmore girls. He and Lorelai date and even get engaged, before ultimately calling things off when he refuses to let Lorelai be a part of his daughter, April’s life—whom he discovered he fathered when she was 12 years old.

Sookie St. James is played by Melissa McCarthy. Sookie is Lorelai’s best friend and the chef at the Independence Inn where Lorelai works. Later, she and Lorelai start their own inn, called the Dragonfly, where Sookie whips up scrumptious meals that attract guests from all over. Quirky, clumsy, and endearing, Sookie is a lovable character who’s always there for Lorelai. She marries her produce supplier, Jackson, and they have frequent battles over fruits and vegetables, making up sweetly before he departs. Sookie and Jackson have two children together, and another on the way when the series ends.

Lane Kim is played by Keiko Agena. Lane is Rory’s best friend from Stars Hollow. Lane spends tons of time hanging out with Lorelai and Rory, indulging in rock music and junk food. She lives with her parents in their home, which is also an antique shop. Her mother, Mrs. Kim, is a Seventh-Day Adventist, who forces her daughter to attend church and follow strict rules. She doesn’t approve of the music or fashion that Lane likes, leading to Lane hiding CDs, clothes, and other forbidden items in secret stashes around her room. Lane plays in a band and eventually marries one of her bandmates, Zack, at a young age and the pair quickly becomes pregnant with a set of twins.

Christopher Hayden is played by David Sutcliffe. Christopher isn’t around much during the first 16 years of Rory’s life, as he focuses more on himself and his business ventures than being a father. Lorelai raises their daughter on her own after refusing to marry him at the age of 16. Christopher is sweet and endearing, pines after Lorelai, and tries to make up for his absence with Rory. Christopher and Lorelai’s relationship is on-again, off-again, and he finds out that his ex-girlfriend, Sherry, is pregnant with his baby just as things start to heat up with him and Lorelai. He ends up raising his second daughter, Gigi, mostly on his own after Sherry takes off.

Paris Gellar is played by Liza Weil. Paris is, at first, Rory’s nemesis at Chilton, before becoming her friend and college roommate. Paris is intense, competitive, and not afraid to tell it like it is, even (or especially) if that means hurting someone’s feelings. She’s an overachiever who takes on every course and extracurricular activity she can in order to set herself up for success.

Dean Forester is played by Jared Padalecki. He’s Rory’s first boyfriend and treats her well, even restoring an old car as a present for her. Dean is sweet, down-to-earth, and a great brother to his little sister, Clara. Dean and Rory’s relationship is on-again, off-again throughout high school. They rekindle their romance when Rory’s in college, even though he’s married to a woman named Lindsay. When Lindsay finds out that Dean cheated on her with Rory, she throws his belongings out their apartment window and they end up getting divorced. Sadly, though, things don’t work out between him and Rory in the end.

Jess Mariano is played by Milo Ventimiglia. Jess comes to Stars Hollow to live with his uncle, Luke Danes, because his mom, Liz, worries that he’s on the wrong path and she doesn’t know how to handle him. Smart and brooding, he quickly captures Rory’s attention. When Dean realizes that Rory likes Jess, he breaks up with her, and Rory and Jess date for a while before he leaves town without a word to seek out his estranged father.

Logan Huntzberger is played by Matt Czuchry. Rory meets Logan in college and discovers he’s part of a secret society called the Life and Death Brigade. Logan comes from old money and his parents are friends with Rory’s grandparents. He’s an adventurous, charming thrill-seeker who gets Rory involved in all sorts of trouble, including stealing a yacht. Though he’s known for being a player, Rory captures his heart and they have a serious relationship throughout college. He proposes to Rory when she graduates, and when she turns him down, he ends things and moves across the country.

Michel Gerard is played by Yanic Truesdale. Michel is a French man who works at both the Independence Inn and Dragonfly Inn with Lorelai and Sookie. He manages the front desk, even though his people skills leave much to be desired. Michel is obsessed with Celine Dion, high-end suits, and chow chows. He’s a bit grumpy, but still a beloved character who’s important in Lorelai’s life.
