How to Get a Rusted Trailer Hitch Ball Off

So you want to take a trailer hitch off your vehicle or change the size of the hitch ball, but the rusted metal won’t even budge. With a few tools and a little bit of elbow grease, you can easily remove the rusted hitch or ball at home. Keep reading for the best ways to remove a rusted hitch mount or trailer ball so you can start towing again.

Spray penetrating fluid on the rust and let it soak in for at least 15 minutes, preferably overnight. The liquid will lubricate the metal so it’s easier for you to pull out.
To pull out a hitch mount rusted into the receiver, try tapping it out with a rubber mallet. If that doesn’t work, pound the receiver with an air hammer.
For a stuck trailer hitch ball, turn the mounting nut with a long-handled wrench. You can heat the nut with a blow torch so it’s easier to unscrew.

Spray the hitch receiver opening with penetrating fluid. Fit the straw of the penetrating fluid into one of the corners between the hitch and the receiver. Use a reciprocating saw with a steel-cutting blade and hold it next to the edge of the receiver. Support the saw with both hands and slowly cut through the hitch, leaving the rusted-in portion inside the receiver. Absolutely! In fact, using lubricant is the best way to avoid a rusted hitch mount altogether. Just put some grease or WD-40 on the hitch where contact is made with the receiver before sliding the hitch into the receiver.

Apply a fixed load to the hitch (block tires if using a trailer or properly attach a chain or strap to a solid object). If using a chain or strap, wrap the hitch in a suitable towel. Make sure that the area in range of the hitch popping out under pressure is clear and protected as needed—particle board or something similar can be used behind the chained hitch to protect the area from the hitch. Note that a towel is not needed if the hitch is attached to the receiver of a trailer or other load because the hitch ball should be locked into the trailer tongue.

If the tapping method does not work, apply a fixed load to the hitch—block tires if using a trailer—or properly attach a chain or strap to a solid object. Have a helper signal the driver as the driver slowly uses the tow vehicle to pull away from the fixed load to remove the hitch.
