If your feathery friends are scratching at their ears or shaking their heads a lot, these are signs that they may have mites and most likely that their coop is infested with mites. Most chicken owners will come across this problem and not know how to deal with it. There are a few different choices for approaching treatment. If you’re using diatomaceous earth make sure not to get it in your chickens eyes or face. It’s recommended to give them a dust bath in ash and dirt to help keep mights away.

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Obtain a tub or large bowl the size of your chicken.
It does not have to be deep or any larger than your chicken but it does have to be able to hold the chicken inside it. To make sure of this, measure your chicken and the tub or lay your chicken inside the tub to see for yourself.
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Fill the tub with wood ash.
Ash from your wood burning stove, fireplace or from a friend's stove will work well; just be sure that it is a couple of days old so it's completely cooled.

  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Catch the chicken that you wish to treat and put them in the tub full of ash.
Pour the ash over their body and rub it in their feathers and skin, using one hand to hold the chicken and the other to pour the ash. Try to cover every part of their body whilst avoiding their eyes and nostrils[1].
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Remove your chicken from the tub after they are fully covered with wood ash.
Make sure to not shake or clean the ash off the bird but to just leave it alone. After that, cover the rest of your chickens with ash.
  5. How.com.vn English: Step 5 Provide sand or wood ash for your chickens at all times.
This lets your chickens dust-bath which kills any mites on them. If it is a rainy day and the sand gets muddy, provide a tub filled with sand inside their shelter/coop.

  • Question
How do I make a garlic juice remedy? I'm unable to purchase it.

Garlic juice is a home remedy, so it's generally not available in stores. Combine 10 ounces of water, 1 ounce of garlic juice, and 1 teaspoon of essential oil (such as lavender, cinnamon, spearmint, bay, or thyme) in a spray bottle, and shake vigorously before use.
  • Question
Could I use cooking oil with the garlic juice?
    How.com.vn English: Amy Harrison
    Amy Harrison
    Top Answerer
Yes; the cooking oil (or vegetable oil) will help to suffocate the mites. Vegetable oil can also be rubbed into the chicken's legs to rid of scaly mites. Garlic juice can be used with oil; however, it isn't a necessity. A formula of garlic juice and plain water is sufficient - 1/4 cup (55 ml) of garlic juice combined with 2 1/4 cup (500 ml) of water. The primary difference between essential oil and cooking oil is that cooking oil tends to be a lot greasier and oilier due to the fatty components.
  • Question
Are chicken mites harmful to humans? Will cedar shavings coated with a protective coating to kill bugs kill chicken mites?
    How.com.vn English: Amy Harrison
    Amy Harrison
    Top Answerer
Chicken mites are not harmful to humans and can only contaminate poultry. As much as cedar shavings will successfully suffocate mites, they are poisonous to many animals--including chickens--and can cause upper respiratory infections. If you'd like a wood shavings as an option to eliminate mites, choose a pet-friendly bedding option.
