   Open the Play Books app on your Android. It's the two-toned blue sideways triangle icon typically found in the app drawer. It may be labeled "Play Books" or just "Books." If you don't see the app, you'll have to download it from the Play Store.

   Tap the Shop tab. It's the storefront icon at the bottom of the screen.

   Browse for a book. The Shop page contains lots of recommendations in various categories—scroll down to see what's available, then swipe across the covers to view all options.

   • To browse by category, tap the Genres oval near the top of the page to open the list, then tap your desired genre.
   • You can also tap the magnifying glass at the top-right corner to search by title, author, genre, or keyword.

   Tap a book cover. This opens the book's page on the Play Store, so you'll technically be leaving the Play Books app now. Here you'll find the book's rating, price, a description, publishing information, and any available deals.

   • If you see a Free Sample link at the top of the page, tap it to check out the book before buying.
   • You can save the book to your wishlist by tapping the bookmark icon at the top-right corner of the screen.

   Tap the price to buy the book. The price is at the top of the book's info page. A list of payment options will appear.

   Select or enter a new payment method. If you see the account you want to pay with, select it now. Otherwise, tap one of the options to add a new payment method now.

   Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm. Depending on your security settings, you may have to verify your passcode or use a biometric to complete the purchase. Once the purchase is made, the book will be saved to your library.

Buying a Book on the Web

   Go to https://play.google.com/store/books in a web browser. Use this method if you're using a computer, iPhone, or iPad. If you're not already signed in with your Google account, click the blue Sign in button at the top-right corner of the page to sign in now.

   • Though you can read Google Play eBooks on the Google Books app for iPhone and iPad, you can only purchase books using the Google Play website. It might be easier to use your computer to buy books, but you can definitely do it in your mobile browser if you wish.
   • You can use this method to purchase a book for an eReader, such as a Kobo or Nook. Unfortunately, you won't be able to move your eBooks to a Kindle.

   Click the Shop tab. It's in the left sidebar. This brings you to the area of store where you can search for and purchase eBooks.

   Search for a book to read. To browse by category, click the Genres menu near the top of the page and make your selection. You can also use the Search bar at the top of the screen to search by title, author, genre, ISBN, publisher, or keyword.

   • Use the the Top Charts or New Arrivals links at the top of the page to find more suggested titles.

   Click a book to learn more about it. Each book has its own page that includes its price, author information, a description, publication date, and various other information. You may even find reviews written by other readers on some titles.

   • Some books offer a free reading sample. If you see a blue Free Sample button at the top of the page, click it to check out the book before buying.
   • To save a book to your wishlist, click the Add to Wishlist link above the book's price near the top of the page.

   Click the price to buy the book. The price is on a blue button near the top-right corner of the book's information page.

   Select or enter a payment method. If you already have a payment method associated with your Google account, you can select or confirm it now. If not, or if you want to add a new payment account, follow the on-screen instructions to do so now.

   Click Buy EBook to complete your purchase. Once your purchase is complete, the book will be saved to your library. You can access your books anywhere you log in to your Google account.

   • To read your book on an iPhone or iPad, install the Google Play Books app from the App Store and sign in using the same account you used to buy the book. Tap Library to view all purchased books, and then tap the book's title to start reading.
   • To read the book on an Android, open the Play Books app, tap Library, and then tap the book name.
   • To read the book on your computer, go to https://play.google.com/books and click My books in the left column to view your library. Click any book in your library to start reading.

Moving a Book to an eReader

   Install Adobe Digital Editions for Windows or macOS. As long as you're using a computer, you can download the books you've purchased from Google Play and transfer them to a compatible eReader using this free software from Adobe. Google eBooks can be read on over 80 different eReaders, including the Barns & Noble Nook and Kobo Reader. At this time, the Amazon Kindle is one of the very few platforms that does not support the Adobe Digital Editions format. To install the app:

   • Go to https://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital-editions/download.html.
   • Click the Macintosh or Windows link to download the correct version for your operating system.
   • Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install.

   Create an Adobe ID. If you don't already have an Adobe ID (username and password) that's associated with the same email address you used to register your eReader, you'll need to create one now. Click here to go to the Adobe accounts page, click Get an Adobe ID, and then follow the on-screen instructions to set up your account.

   Go to https://play.google.com/store/books in a web browser. If you're not already signed in with your Google account, click the blue Sign in button at the top-right corner of the page to sign in now. Be sure to sign in using the account you used to buy the book.

   Click My Books. It's in the menu that runs along the left side of the page.

   Click the ⋮ menu on the book cover. It's the icon of three vertical dots at the book cover's bottom-right corner. A menu will expand.

   Click Download EPUB or Download PDF. You may see one or both options. If you see both, Google recommends downloading the EPUB version. The resulting file will download in the ACSM format, ending with the .ACSM file extension.

   • You may have to click Save to start the download.

   Open Adobe Digital Editions. You'll find it in the Start menu on Windows or in the Applications folder on macOS.

   Authorize your computer. If it's your first time opening the app, you may see a window that prompts you to authorize your computer. If you don't see the window, click the Help menu at the top and select Authorize Computer to bring it up. Then, follow these steps:

   • Select Adobe ID from the "eBook Vendor" menu.
   • Enter your Adobe ID username and password.
   • Click Authorize and then OK.

   Connect your eReader to the computer. After a few moments, you should see it appear in the left column of Adobe Digital Editions.

    Add the downloaded book to your Adobe Digital Editions library. You can do this either by dragging the downloaded file (the one that ends with .ACSM) to the window or by clicking File > Add to Library, browsing to the file, and clicking Open. Once the file is imported, its cover will appear.

    Drag the book to your eReader. If dragging the file doesn't work, right-click the book cover, select Copy to Computer/Device, and then select your eReader.

  You don't need any special license or permits to buy books from the Google Play Store. You may be thinking of the fact that you aren't buying the books themselves, just a "license" to read them (in effect it is the same, except that in rare circumstances Google could choose to cut off access to a book).
