Are your Stardew Valley chickens unhappy? Chickens need to be fed hay every day to maintain their happiness level and grow into their adult versions. You can manually feed chickens by placing hay on the Feeder Bench or use the Autofeed System with Deluxe Coops. This How.com.vn guide will show you how to feed your chickens in Stardew Valley.
Things You Should Know
- Obtain hay by harvesting Grass or Wheat with a Scythe, or purchase hay from Marnie for 50g.
- Manually place the hay on the Feeding Bench at the very back of a Coop or Barn.
- If you have a Deluxe Barn or Deluxe Coop, you can build a Silo to use the Autofeed System.
Steps
- Obtain hay. Hay is dried grass used to feed animals on your farm. Hay can be harvested from Grass (grown around your farm) or Wheat (planted from Wheat Seeds) using the Scythe tool.
- You can also purchase hay from Marnie's Ranch for 50g or from the Desert Trader in exchange for Omni Geodes.[1]
- Place the hay on the Feeding Bench. When you enter a Coop, this bench will be in the far back of the building. Select the hay in your inventory, then interact with each empty spot on the Feeding Bench.
- In a regular Coop, you'll have 4 slots on the Feeding Bench. For a Big Coop, you'll have 8 slots, and for a Deluxe Coop, you'll have 12 slots.
- The chickens will begin eating the hay if they haven't eaten already. Be sure to refill the hay every day to keep your chickens happy. You can use their products to create Artisan Goods for a large profit.
Advertisement - Allow your chickens to eat outside (optional). If you don't want to feed your chickens manually, you can allow them to roam outside to eat grass. Interact with the little gate outside of the Coop to open it. Be sure to close the gate before you start the next day.
- It's recommended to let the grass grow so you can harvest hay at the end of Fall to prepare for feeding in Winter.

- Build a Silo. A Silo can be built by Robin in exchange for 100g, 100 Stone, 10 Clay, and 5 Copper Bars. The Silo can hold up to 240 hay, and will automatically hold the new hay stock when you harvest Grass or Wheat on your farm.
- Having a Silo will make your hay accessible from all Coops and Barns on your farm.
- Upgrade to a Deluxe Barn or Deluxe Coop. Deluxe versions of farm buildings come with an Autofeed System. This takes hay from the Hay Hopper and distributes it to your animals daily until the hay supply runs out.
- To upgrade from a Big Coop to a Deluxe Coop, you'll need 20,000g, 500 Wood, and 200 Stone.
- To upgrade from a Big Barn to a Deluxe Barn, you'll need 25,000g, 550 Wood, and 300 Stone.
- Hay will automatically be placed on the Feeding Bench every morning. Be sure to keep your hay stocked to keep your animals happy; you can use their products to complete Community Center bundles and cook recipes.
