How to Edit the Hosts File on Android

This How.com.vn teaches you how to edit the hosts file on your Android phone or tablet. You must have rooted your Android to edit the hosts file.

Steps

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Install ES File Explorer.
    If you don’t already have this app installed on your Android, you can get it free from the Play Store.
    • You must have a rooted Android to edit the hosts file.
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Open ES File Explorer.
    It’s the blue and white folder icon with an “es” at its lower-right corner.

    It’s at the top-left corner of the app.
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Slide the “Root Explorer” switch to icon.
    If a pop-up appears requesting permission to access files, tap ALLOW.

    This opens a list of files and folders on your Android.
  6. How.com.vn English: Step 6 Navigate to the root directory.
    To do this, swipe to the right on the top navigation bar until you see the “/” symbol.

    It’s near the top-left corner of the screen below the “≡” icon.

    It’s one of the gray icons with a “?” inside. The “Open as” dialog will appear.
    • You can search for this file by typing “hosts” into the search bar at the top of the screen.
  11. How.com.vn English: Step 11 Tap Text.
    A list of apps will appear.
  12. How.com.vn English: Step 12 Tap ES Note Editor.
    This opens the hosts file.
  13. How.com.vn English: Step 13 Tap Edit.
    It’s at at the top of the screen. You can now make changes to the file.
  14. How.com.vn English: Step 14 Make changes to the hosts file.
    Add or remove hosts as necessary.
  15. How.com.vn English: Step 15 Tap Save.
    It’s near the top-right corner of the screen. If prompted to grant permission, tap ALLOW.
  16. How.com.vn English: Step 16 Tap the back button.
    Your changes to the host file are now saved.
