How to Earn Junior Ranger Badges

The National Park Service (NPS) is an organization dedicated to protecting lands in America, much like the United States Forest Service (USFS) or the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). At most NPS sites, there is a program known as the Junior Ranger Program. Children (and adults!) fill out a booklet and turn it in. If a ranger approves, then you get a badge! This article will teach you how to get a Junior Ranger badge.

Method 1 of 2:

Getting a Badge in Person

  1. How.com.vn English: Step 1 Go to a park visitor center.
Once at the visitor center, go inside and ask a ranger at the front desk for a Junior Ranger booklet. They will tell you what to do. If they don't, the instructions are inside the book.
    • Note that all NPS sites may not have a badge. Some are just monuments or statues protected from being torn down.
  2. How.com.vn English: Step 2 Take a look at the activities in the book.
In most books, you will have to do a certain number of activities based on your age. For example, you may have to do only three things if you're five years old, or ten things if you're thirteen or older.
    • Remember that activities also range in difficulty. Some will be harder than others.

  3. How.com.vn English: Step 3 Complete the activities.
Some activities will be things such as a word search, or crossword puzzle, whereas some others will have you go somewhere in the park to do a specific thing.
    • Some activities may include drawing, but don't worry. If you're not a good artist, it doesn't matter. You're not being graded on it. It's just for fun and so try your best!
  4. How.com.vn English: Step 4 Return to the visitor center.
Once you have completed everything you need to, return to the visitor center. Ask a ranger at the desk to check your book. They will look through it. If they approve, they will ask you to take an oath. Once you do, they will give you your badge.
    • When you go to the visitor center, it doesn't have to be the one you got your book from. Some large monuments or parks have multiple visitor centers, so don't worry about which one you go to.
  5. How.com.vn English: Step 5 Note that not all (most, but not all) sites give a badge.
Some also have patches available for purchase or for free once you complete the book. Some parks, such as Yellowstone National Park, have only patches.
