How to Draw an Apple

If you can draw a few basic shapes, you can sketch an apple! For a realistic apple, create a circle that narrows at the bottom and has a bumpy lower portion with an indented top. Add highlights and shadows so your apple looks 3-dimensional. To make a cute cartoon apple, start with a circle and sketch a curved line at the top and bottom to give the apple its classic shape. Create an m-shape at the top and an upward indent at the bottom. Press firmly and draw a line that curves in an m-shape across the top of the circle. Erase unnecessary guidelines from the middle of the apple. Use the eraser on the back of your pencil so you can erase just the visible guidelines and not your apple outline. Use cross-hatching and shading to make your apple appear 3-dimensional. Shade across the entire apple in 1 direction. Imagine where the light is hitting the apple and add more shading to parts of the apple that are hidden in shadow, such as near the bottom. Erase areas near the top of the apple that you'd like to highlight. Take a rubber eraser or use the clean eraser on the end of your pencil and gently erase a circular space near the top of the apple on 1 side. - Go back and use your finger or a blending stump to smudge the edges of the highlighted space so they realistically blur into the rest of the apple.
- Dab at any overly shaded areas with a kneaded eraser to pick up some of the excess graphite.

Try to not add too much detail to the shapes within the apple. Use bright colors, like red, yellow and green. Don't add outlines, it may be hard but it's actually very easy, just outline each part using the color that will be within it, such as a red outline, for the body of the apple with the same shade of red for the fill. It's also a good idea to use yellow for the shine effect that's on the apple. Have the opposite color of the apple as the background (use a color wheel) -- the opposite of that color makes colors more popping.

Just follow where the shadow and highlight is on an image of an apple. If there is shading, add light pencil lines and blend them to create shadow. If you're highlighting, create a contrast between both light and dark, and leave the light in place.
