To prevent power loss due to a degraded iPhone battery, iOS automatically manages and reduces various effects such as performance, speaker volume, and camera flash. This helps to prevent unexpected shutdowns. In late 2017, an iPhone user discovered that replacing the battery restores regular performance[1] and there was an outrage, resulting in Apple releasing a statement. Afterward, Apple added the option to disable performance management.
Steps
- Ensure your device supports performance management. Performance management only applies to iPhone 6 devices and later. Apple's newest devices don't feature this as more efficient alternate battery-preservation systems exist.
- Update your iPhone to iOS 11.3 or newer. Apple introduced ability to disable performance management and view battery health in iOS 11.3. Therefore, you must update your device to iOS 11.3 or a newer version.
- Tap on the Battery section.
- Scroll down if you don't see this.
- Tap Battery Health (Beta).
- Check to see if performance management is applied. Look under the "Peak Performance Capability" listing. If performance management has been enabled on your iPhone, you'll see a message that reads: This iPhone has experienced an unexpected shutdown because the battery was unable to deliver the necessary peak power. Performance management has been applied to help prevent this from happening again. Disable…
- Tap the "Disable..." link. Note that performance management can't be re-enabled after you disable it. Don't worry, though—if your iPhone experiences an unexpected shutdown, it'll turn back on automatically (and you can disable it again).
- Explore battery replacement options. If you see a message that explains that your battery has degraded or is experiencing issues, Apple recommends having it replaced. Official battery replacements were discounted until the end of 2018.Advertisement
