   Open Gmail in your internet browser. Type mail.google.com into the address bar, and hit ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return on your keyboard.

   • If you're not automatically logged in, click the SIGN IN button on the top-right corner of the page, and sign in to your mailbox.

   Find your name on the left menu. You'll find your first name or username below the mailbox list on the left-hand side of your screen.

   icon next to your name. This will open your chat options on a pop-up panel.

   Scroll down and click Sign out of Hangouts. This button is at the bottom of the chat menu.

   • This will sign you out of Hangouts. You will now appear offline to your contacts.

   icon on the top-right. You can find this button below your profile picture thumbnail in the upper-right corner of the page. It will open a drop-down menu.

   • If you don't have a profile picture, you'll see your name initial in a circle here.

   Click Settings on the menu. This will open your account and mailbox settings on a new page.

   Click the Chat tab in Settings. You can find it between "Add-ons" and "Advanced" on the tab bar below the Settings heading.

Disabling Notifications in Hangouts

   Open the Hangouts website in your internet browser. Type hangouts.google.com into the address bar, and hit ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return on your keyboard.

   • If you're not automatically logged in, click the blue Sign in button on the top-right, and sign in to your mailbox.

   Click the three-dot icon on the left sidebar. You can find this button below the

   

   icon near the upper-left corner of your screen. It will open your navigation menu.

   Click Settings on the menu. This will open your chat options and settings.

   Uncheck the Sounds for incoming messages option. You can find it below the "Notifications" heading.

   • This way, you won't hear a sound notification when you receive a new message.

   Uncheck the Ring on incoming phone calls option. It's below the "Notifications" heading.

   • This way, you won't hear a phone ring notification when a contact is calling you for an audio or video chat.

   Click the Mute notifications for drop-down. This option will allow you to temporarily mute all chat notifications for a selected period of time.

   Select how long you want to mute chat. You can mute chat for an hour, a few hours, a few days, or even a week.
