Focus on directing! One common mistake that people make when they're directing a film is that they try to do everything. Sometimes early in your career you might have to act, write, direct, and produce, but if you're really serious about directing, you should try to do a project where that's the only thing you do.

If you can tell from the get-go that the actor is going to be a "difficult personality," then back away immediately. This particular actor may be able to draw a crowd with their name, but there may be better options that will make working on the set easier.
