How to Delete a Word File on a PC

This How.com.vn teaches you how to delete a Word document on your Windows PC. If the file is saved on your hard drive, this will move it to the recycling bin. If the file is saved on a disk, CD, or network location, the file will be permanently deleted.

Using File Explorer

    Press Win + E to open File Explorer.
    • Alternatively, look for a folder icon on your task bar or desktop, or search for it using the search icon on your taskbar.

    Navigate through your folders on the left, or use the search bar to search by file name.
    • Double-click on a folder to open it, or right-click and select Open.

    Alternatively, you can hit the Delete button while the file is highlighted, or click and drag the file to the recycling bin on your desktop.

    Look for a blue square with a white "W", or click the search icon on your taskbar and search for Word.

    • You cannot delete a file if it is currently open in Word. Make sure to close out of the file by clicking the X in the top right corner before deleting.

      • If the file was originally stored on your hard drive, it can be restored if you accidentally deleted it. To do this, open the Recycling Bin on your desktop. The icon looks like a bin with a recycling symbol on the front. Find the file you wish to restore, right-click, and select Restore.
