Steps
Setting Up the Text-to-Speech Engine
- Scroll down and tap Languages & input. This will open a new page with your Android's language settings.
- Some Android versions may have the Languages and input option under the General management heading.
- Tap Text-to-speech output under the Speech heading. It will open your text-to-speech settings on a new page.
- On some Androids, this option may just be named Text-to-speech.
- Select your preferred text-to-speech engine. Under the "Preferred engine" heading, tap the text-to-speech engine you want to use on your phone or tablet.
- "Google Text-to-speech Engine" should be your default choice. If you have other engines set up here, you can tap on the engine's name to select it.
- Move the "Speech rate" slider to your preferred level. Long-press and slide the slider to left or right to set your speech rate.
- You can reset the speech rate anytime by tapping Reset speech rate below the speech rate slider.
- Move the "Pitch" slider to your preferred level. Slide the Pitch slider to the left or right to have a higher or lower pitch.
- You can reset the pitch anytime by tapping Reset pitch below the pitch slider.

Using Text-to-Speech
- Open Google Play Books on your Android. The Play Books icon looks like a blue triangle. You can find it on your Apps menu.
- Not all e-readers are compatible with text-to-speech. A few good choices are Google Play Books, Moon+ Reader, and ezPDF Reader, all of which you can download from the Play Store.
- Tap the Library button at the bottom. This will list all your available ebooks and text files.
- Tap the file you want to convert to speech. This will open your text file in Play Books.
- Tap the ⋮ button on the top-right. It will open a drop-down menu.
- Tap Read aloud on the menu. This will start the text-to-speech engine, and start reading your text aloud. You may now listen to your text file.Advertisement
