When you take a photo on an iPhone or iPad, it’s saved by default as an HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) file. While HEIC images are high-quality and don’t take up a lot of space, they’re incompatible with many apps and devices. Fortunately, it’s easy to convert them to the more standard JPG format with built-in software or third-party apps on your Mac. In this article, we’ll explain several ways to do it.

Things You Should Know

  • You can easily convert HEIC files to JPG in Preview or Photos, which are both built-in photo viewing and editing tools on Mac.
  • Mac’s built-in Automator app makes it easy to batch-convert photos directly from the Finder.
  • If you have an older Mac (running Sierra or earlier), you will need to use third-party apps or websites.

    • Choose a different save location
    • Adjust the quality of the exported image (using the slider from Least to Best).
