How to Clean Silk

Silk is a fabric made from natural fibers created by moth caterpillars. Good for both summer and winter wear, silk is a delicate fabric that requires special care when cleaned. Manufacturers' instructions often direct owners to seek professional dry cleaning services to clean their silk garments. However, with some care and special attention, you can spot clean silk with natural cleaning products, and hand wash using soap and water.

Determine if the color will fade or run. Spot test the silk fabric by blotting a water-moistened cotton ball on a hidden point in the garment, such as an inside seam. If the color does not fade or come off onto the cotton ball, the garment is safe to hand wash.
- Whenever using any cleaning product, such as vinegar or alcohol, first test it out on a hidden portion of whatever item you’re washing.
- If any discoloration occurs, bring the item to a local dry cleaner to have it professionally cleaned.
- For spot-treating stains, the faster you get to the stain, the better. Immediately flush the affected area with cold water, rubbing the silk against itself to work the stain out without wearing the fabric. If water doesn’t work, proceed to use a natural cleaning product.
- Never use chlorine bleach on silk.

Use lukewarm water, lemon juice, or a mild vinegar solution to spot clean. Mix a couple tablespoons of either vinegar or lemon juice with two cups of lukewarm water to create a mild solution. Use a towel to extract excess water from the silk garment. Take the item out of the water. Do not wring or twist it, or you’ll risk damaging the fibers. Instead, gently roll it up in a fluffy towel. Press the towel against the garment as you roll it, causing water and moisture to be squeezed out.
- Never put silk items into the dryer. The heat from the dryer will destroy the silk fibers and shrink the garment.

Read any tag attached and notice if it has any special instructions. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove any surface dust. Only use a vacuum if the shade is hardbacked. If it's a softbacked shade, with only silk fabric, fill a tub or basin with lukewarm water and add a teaspoon of mild detergent or soap. Spot clean using the softest cloth you have available, gently rubbing out any stains. Submerge the lampshade in the tub of water, gently circulating it up and down and side to side. Drain or dump the water, and refill it the basin with clean water. Give the lampshade a rinse, gently circulating it once again to remove any soap or suds. Repeat rinsing if necessary, until all soap has been removed, then set out on a towel to dry.

Clean a silk tie with the same basic procedures given above. Use lukewarm water with very little liquid soap. Agitate the tie in the mild soap with gentle pushing motions to force soapy water into the fabric. (If there are any stained areas on the tie, treat these as in general care instructions for stained silk). After washing is completed, obtain a new container of cold, clean water and use this to gently rinse soap out of the silk. Remove the tie from the water bath and roll it gently within a cotton towel to press excess water from the silk. Hang the tie to dry in the same manner as above.
