How to Choose a Foundation for Dark Skin Tones

Finding the right foundation can be difficult no matter what your complexion is, but it is often even more challenging for women with dark skin tones. For a long time, cosmetic lines offered very limited shade options for dark complexions. Dark skin has a great deal of nuance in color and tone, and makeup manufacturers have only recently become sophisticated enough to address these complexities. Now shade ranges for dark complexions are much wider, but selecting the perfect foundation shade still takes a bit of work. The most important things to work out are the undertone and overtone of your skin. Once you’ve nailed those down, you’ll be ready to choose your perfect foundation formula.

Exposure to the elements, acne, scarring and other skin conditions can cause your overtone, or surface shade, to change and vary. Your skin’s undertone, however, never changes. Consider your overall skin tone. There are three major undertones – warm, cool and neutral. If your skin color ranges between tan and light brown, you probably have a warm undertone. Don’t judge based on which metal you like better – which one looks more flattering next to your skin? If silver makes you look lifeless and gold makes you look bright and glowing, you probably have a warm undertone. Usually if you're looking a little gray, what you need is the right concealer and a good bronzer. Bronzer gives you a tan, sun-kissed look. It keeps you from looking a little 2 dimensional. Also, make sure to clean all your brushes! You can also mix concealers until you find your desired look.
