How to Build a Hidden Camera Detector

No one likes to be spied on without their permission. Unfortunately, hidden camera technology is getting better year by year and finding one with the naked eye can be rather difficult. Luckily, there is a cheap and easy way you can build your own hidden camera detector. All you need is some red cellophane, a toilet paper roll, and a flashlight. Once the detector is built, you can use it to locate any hidden cameras that may be in the room.

Cut out 2 3 in × 3 in (7.6 cm × 7.6 cm) squares of red cellophane. You can purchase red cellophane at an arts and crafts store or you can buy it online. Use a ruler to measure out the squares of cellophane and cut them to size with scissors.^{[1]XResearch source}
- You can also use red plastic or vinyl as an alternative to cellophane as long as it’s transparent.

Tape one cellophane square over the end of a toilet paper roll. Place the cellophane over the hole on the end of the roll and wrap scotch tape around the sides so that the cellophane stays in place. This will act as your viewfinder for the hidden camera detector.^{[2]XResearch source}

Tape the other square over the end of a flashlight. Place the cellophane over the top of the lens of the flashlight and tape down the sides. The flashlight should reflect against any lense from hidden cameras in the room.^{[3]XResearch source}
- You can also unscrew the lens and place the cellophane in between the light and lens before screwing it back on if you don’t want to tape it.

Turn off the lights in the room. It needs to be dark in the room so that you can see the refraction from the lense of any hidden cameras. You may not be able to see this refraction without the lights being off.^{[4]XResearch source}
- You can also close the blinds or shutters in the room you’re inspecting to make it as dark as possible.

Hidden cameras will have a small hole where the lens is hidden. If you used your simple camera detector, you can verify shiny areas in the room by inspecting the object that refracted light. Purchase a radio frequency detector. You can purchase a radio frequency detector online or at select department stores. Turn on the detector and hold it up around objects that you think may be hiding a hidden camera. These apps will either detect an electromagnetic field or the reflection from a hidden camera lens. Yes, but you'll need two of them. Download a red strobe light app on one phone and turn on a red strobe light. Then, turn on the camera on the other phone. Scan the wall with the strobe light while pointing the phone camera at it. If there's a hidden camera, you'll see a reflection in the phone camera screen.
