This sudden surge in estrogen levels stimulates excessive melanin production, also known as hyperpigmentation. Melanin is a dark-colored pigment that accumulates in the skin to give it color. Excessive production of melanin during pregnancy will produce skin pigmentation in different parts of the body, such as the face, neck, abdomen and armpits.
