How to Adjust a Sliding Screen Door

Sliding screen doors are a great way to let fresh air and light into your home without leaving it completely open. Screen doors fall out of alignment or even break down over time, but fortunately they are not difficult to adjust. Most problems are from dirty tracks or wheels. Screen doors also have tension screws you can use to change the door's position. If that doesn't work, check for damaged wheels that need to be replaced. After a successful adjustment, your door will glide along its tracks almost as well as it did when it was first installed.

Inspect the track for debris causing the door to stick. Slide the door back as far as you can. Over time, debris fills the track, preventing the door from moving smoothly or even at all. Clean gunk out of the track with a stiff brush. Use a wire brush to pull the debris out of the frame. Remove as much of it as you can before testing the door again. Locate the wheels along the top and bottom edges of the door by gently pulling the edges of the track away from it. Close the door again and see if you notice a gap between the edge and the frame. The track the screen door slides through does not need to be lubricated. Lubricating it actually attracts more dirt, meaning more cleaning!

If you are unable to adjust the door to make it work properly, you could always replace it with a new one. Once you know how to remove the old door, installing a new one isn’t a challenge!
